The Person Behind the Practice

Meet Roger Edwards

My path to psychotherapy began with a career dedicated to helping people move, recover, and return to the activities that matter most to them.

Over time, I became increasingly interested in why people facing similar physical challenges could experience such different recoveries. That curiosity ultimately led me to explore the important role our thoughts, emotions, relationships, and expectations play in well-being.

Professional Journey

From Physical Recovery to Psychological Well-Being

For more than two decades, I worked as a physical therapist and athletic trainer, helping people navigate injuries, surgery, chronic pain, and the physical demands of sport. I worked with individuals from many walks of life, including collegiate, professional, and national-team athletes.

After approximately 15 years in orthopedic care, I noticed that people undergoing similar procedures often had remarkably different experiences and outcomes. Physical findings alone did not always explain those differences. I became increasingly interested in the influence of psychological and social factors on pain, recovery, and resilience.

That interest led me to the University of Pennsylvania, where I earned a Master of Applied Positive Psychology. My capstone work explored the relationship between pain and psychosocial factors. I later pursued graduate education in clinical psychology, bringing those experiences together in my current work as a psychotherapist.

Today, I draw on 28 years in healthcare and my education in clinical psychology, positive psychology, and physical therapy to help clients develop practical strategies for improving their emotional and physical well-being.

My current practice focuses on psychotherapy, informed by my extensive experience in physical therapy and athletic training. While physical therapy and athletic training services are not part of my routine psychotherapy practice, I welcome conversations about opportunities to apply my broader professional expertise through consultation or other professional collaborations.

Beyond the Office

A Little More About Me

Movement and sport have been part of my life since my days as a high school cross-country runner. Over the years, I've enjoyed marathons and triathlons, experiences that have deepened my appreciation for both the physical and psychological sides of perseverance.

I'm also a husband and father of two, and I value the connections and community that make life meaningful. Among the character strengths I strive to bring to my work and daily life are zest, hope, gratitude, self-regulation, and honesty.
